Prison Construction

Folsom Prison was built from native granite quarried near the site. The availability of stone shaped the design and allowed the prison blocks to be built as durable units. The construction story is also a story of labor, landscape, and planning. The prison grew from local materials and the practical demands of creating a secure institution on the American River.
