The Walls

Historic prison walls and security infrastructure.

Preserved Legacy Content

Before the familiar walls enclosed the prison, Folsom was often described as a prison without walls. The surrounding river, terrain, and institutional discipline formed part of its early security. Later wall construction changed the shape and identity of the prison yard. The walls became both a security feature and one of the most recognizable symbols of Folsom State Prison.
